The Bar Hill Residents Association published the Bar Hill News in December 1967. It was produced on a single sheet of A4 and then photocopied for each resident.
A copy of the first issue is held in the Internet Archive and can be accessed here. Stories in the first issue include updates from the developers and the distribution of welfare foods.
We have digital copies of MOST of the Bar Hill News issues. We are working to make as many available online as possible, but this will take some time. If you have any documents related to our village you want to add to the Village Archive, please contact us!
The Bar Hill News is entirely funded by advertising. If you'd like to include your advert in the magazine, the publication deadline is the same as for articles—usually the second Thursday of the month.
Historically, we have print issues for 11 months of the year, although this will change to 12 months at the end of 2023/ start of 2024. When we were printing/ collating the issue ourselves, it didn't make sense to require our team to work Christmas Week - with automated external printing (via Mixam), we have enough time in December to produce and print the January issue.
We print in black and white (usually), although we sometimes do colour front/ back cover issues, typically around Christmas and the Village Féte & Festival. Colour advertising spaces will be strictly limited, so if you'd like to be included in a colour issue, please let us know.
Once printed, the Bar Hill News is delivered to every doorstep in Bar Hill, and bundles are left at the Health Centre, the Fox, the Library, and Bar Hill Sports and Social Club (at the village hall). We usually have the bundles available for collection by our deliverers at the end of the month—delivery usually takes place in the first week of the month.
On the 1st of the Month, the magazine will be available online (via the Internet Archive). In addition, we manage several email (notify-only) lists;
BHN Contributors - A list of local clubs and groups who submit articles/ generate news for each issue. Emailed once a month with the deadline for the next issue.
BHN Digital Copy Recipients - Emailed once a month with a link to the new issue.
All email distribution lists are managed by the BHN Editor (bhn-editor@barhill-ca.org). Contact the editor to be added to the Contributors group; click on the link at the top of this page to be added to the Digital Copy Recipients group.
We offer adverts in full-page, half-page or quarter-page sizes (two versions, vertical or horizontal).
The cost ranges from £66/ month for a full page to £16.50/month for a quarter page. Advertisements are placed on a rolling basis unless expressly agreed otherwise. We invoice quarterly after the issues are printed.
The rates and sizes (as of March 2025) are;
Full-page: 20.0 x 28.7 cm, £66 / month
Half-page: 20.0 x 14.15 cm, £33 / month
Quarter-page either:
9.9 x 14.15 cm, £16.50 / month
20.0 x 7.0 cm, £16.50 / month
The majority of our advertisers favour the 1/4 (vertical) split.
For more information related to advertising (including invoicing and payments), please get in touch with bhn-advertising@barhill-ca.org. For help putting together an advert, don't hesitate to contact the Editor at bhn-editor@barhill-ca.org.
Except for the December issue, most issues of Bar Hill News are printed in black and white. As of December 2023, we have added the option to include a full-colour A5 leaflet in the magazine. The cost, £80, includes printing and distribution. If the back of your leaflet is blank, we reserve the right to include Community Association (our charity) content there. We will have our content in black and white unless agreed otherwise.
However, if you have a pre-printed leaflet and require distribution, the cost is £40.
PLEASE NOTE: the sizes above (cm) are related to A4, but we print the magazine on A5. Tiny text could make an advert very difficult to read when printed.
If you’d like to contact the Editor then you can either write to BHN Editor c/o Bar Hill Parish Council Offices, Hanover Close, Bar Hill. CB23 8EH, email bhn-editor@barhill-ca.org, or call 07814 871752.
Opinions expressed in the publication are not necessarily those of the Bar Hill Community Association.
Anonymous letters will not be published. Names and addresses may be withheld at the discretion of the editor.
There is no charge (and we welcome submission of!) articles - please aim for around 200 words to fill a half-page, 120 words will allow for the use of images and allow the presentation of the article to be optimised. We try and include every single article received in each issue although preference will be given to local articles from individuals or local organisations should space need to be rationed.
What’s On, For Sale or Lost and Found items appear at the Editor’s discretion (usually dependent on space). All items will be included for a single month/ issue - unless agreed otherwise.
Editorial decisions are usually discussed within the Editorial group within the Bar Hill Community Association. The editors decision on all matters is final.
All items should be submitted to bhn-editor@barhill-ca.org.
